2027 Building Bridges Symposium: Protecting Health After the Fire Is Out

Wildfires can threaten health long after the flames are out. As first responders, workers and residents return to rebuild their communities, they face complex and evolving occupational and environmental health challenges, from lingering smoke and particulate exposure to hazardous debris and long-term mental health effects. Understanding these risks, and knowing how to communicate, assess and mitigate them, is essential to protecting public health after the fire.

Who Should Attend

This symposium is designed for occupational and environmental health and safety professionals and clinicians, including physicians (MD/DO), nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, registered environmental health specialists, industrial hygienists, certified safety professionals, ergonomists, researchers and other allied health professionals.

Day 1: Wildfire Health Risks and Lessons Learned (Online)

Hear from leading experts and practitioners on the health challenges that emerge after a wildfire, and learn from recent fires in the wildland-urban interface.

Day 2: Hands-On Tools for Wildfire Recovery (In Person, Berkeley)

Day 2 turns knowledge into practical tools for wildfire recovery. Through interactive workshops and discussions, you will work through real-world challenges such as assessing air quality, selecting respiratory protection, navigating cleanup and remediation requirements, and communicating risk to communities. You will leave with actionable resources to bring back to your workplace and community.

Join researchers, practitioners, first responders, and community leaders as we share lessons learned and develop practical solutions for protecting health in the aftermath of wildfire.
